Kappa Phi Gamma will be following the example set by other NAPA organizations and eliminating the word "Colony" from our Greek Life terminology. When referring to established schools or schools that have not achieved Chapter status, we will use the terms "Charter(s)" or "Charter Schools."
By definition, colonization is "the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the Indigenous people of an area." This term alludes to the genocide of Indigenous peoples of many lands and the erasure of their cultures. While the term may mean something different in Greek Life, the language we use and choose not to use should be reflective of our principles.
By November 8th, 2020, we require all of our Chapters/Charters to change their terminology in their documents, on social media, and in the language they use when speaking in person. While we understand it takes time to get used to a change, we also expect our Sorors to lead by example.
With this change, we also encourage our Chapters/Charters to acknowledge the lands of Indigenous peoples when hosting events. This small act is a start to raising awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights while recognizing the history of colonialism.
